Saigon Street Food: 7 Must-Try Dishes at 20 Thuoc Street

Known as the busiest “snack paradise” in District 4 of Saigon, 20 Thuoc Street is one of the best places for authentic Vietnamese street food.

In the heart of Saigon’s District 4 lies a hidden treasure that locals cherish – yet remains off the radar for many tourists.

Known as Đường 20 Thước or 20 Thuoc Street, the street’s unique name hints at its compactness. But in reality, it’s a bustling street with food shops along both sides, each offering tasty treats for those searching for authentic Vietnamese food.

A friend from Saigon introduced me to this street, and I was so intrigued by all of the food offerings that I found myself returning here with Trey three more times!

7 Foods to Eat at Saigon’s 20 Thuoc Street in District 4

We visited 20 Thuoc Street on three separate occasions to discover its food stalls and explore all of its Vietnamese street foods.

We visited 8 unique shops, each presenting a distinct take on local tastes. From savory soups to sweet treats, 20 Thuoc Street has a wide variety of foods to try.

Below, we’ve compiled an in-depth overview of each stall we visited. Not only will you find our reviews, but also links to their locations on Google Maps. We’ve also listed the prices we paid for each item, helping you plan your journey to 20 Thuoc Street.

Fried Pasta, Fried Dough

This meal is a must-try and it’s absolutely delicious! It’s known as nui chiên, bột chiên, or in English: fried pasta, fried dough.

The dish consists of fried macaroni, rice flour cakes, eggs, and green onion. It’s especially tasty because the more oil they use, the crispier and more golden brown it becomes.

Alongside the main dish, they serve green papaya and a thick brown dipping sauce. The sauce is sweet, made from a sugary soy sauce that’s not as sweet as teriyaki sauce.

Honestly, I wanted to eat this every time we visited 20 Thuoc Street, but there were so many other foods to try!


Flan is probably what 20 Thuoc is most famous for. Bánh Flan Ngọc Nga is located in the heart of 20 Thuoc and is the most famous flan shop in Saigon, and there are a few other flan shops that have sprung up along the street.

We visited two flan shops at 20 Thuoc, including the famous Bánh Flan Ngọc Nga and less-famous (but just as good) Quán Quỳnh Hoa.

Bánh Flan Ngọc Nga

This flan is amazing! Bánh Flan Ngọc Nga is the most popular flan shop on 20 Thuoc, offering a wide variety. They even have silky tofu desserts with fruit flavors that remind you of the flan.

We’ve been told that this is the most famous flan shop in Saigon, so it is probably the most well-known shop on this street. It’s also the first place that I went to at 20 Thuoc when my friend from Saigon brought me there. We tried four different flan varieties in one go and I was hooked!

The best way to eat their flan is by dining in. They serve the flan in a pool of Vietnamese coffee, which you then top with ice. It makes for the perfect treat, especially since the flans are small, so you can sample several different ones if you’d like.

The matcha flan was our favorite – it has such a nice bitterness to it! The shop is always bustling, with many people ordering takeout because it’s so delicious! This is definitely my favorite flan spot.

Quán Quỳnh Hoa

Right across from Bánh Flan Ngọc Nga, there’s another flan shop named Quán Quỳnh Hoa. Trey actually favors this flan – especially the chocolate one.

This flan is a little different because it has a layer with a cheesy texture at the bottom. While the top is smooth and silky, the bottom is thicker and cheese-like.

Tiny Gourd Sausages

  • 💸 Price: 10,000 VND for 3 sausages

When most people think of sausages, long, cylindrical shapes come to mind. But these tiny gourd sausages are different – they’re small and look like little balls.

When biting into one of the sausages, they’re juicy on the inside, with a taste similar to char siu.

We ate our sausages with cucumber slices and dipped them in hoisin and chili sauces. However, we weren’t overly impressed with them, and think that there might be another stall out there that makes them better.

Hu Tieu

Hu Tieu is a well-known noodle soup in Vietnam, and of course, there’s a shop that sells it on 20 Thuoc.

The highlight of this specific Hu Tieu is its broth, which is the best we’ve had in Saigon. It has a slight fishy flavor, but it’s also very earthy. Surprisingly, it has a pronounced lettuce flavor that we thought was outstanding.

However, not everything about the soup was perfect. While the noodles were good, they were slightly too chewy for our liking. The pork wasn’t of the best quality either, but the shrimp was delicious and high quality.

Sponge Cake

Sponge cake is a beloved snack among children in Vietnam. They are not your typical cakes but are made like sandwiches using a panini press.

The process of making a sponge cake involves making a batter and then baking it within a sandwich press, resulting in little triangle-shaped sandwiches.

During the cooking process, fillings are sometimes added, such as cheese or meat. This results in a nice little fluffy cake with hidden treats on the inside.

This concept reminded us of “toasties” we tried in Thailand, which are available at 7-Eleven stores. There, toasties are pre-made and simply heated in a panini press, but in Vietnam, they’re freshly made right before your eyes.

Korean Fried Chicken

This Korean fried chicken is absolutely phenomenal, which is evident from the number of takeout orders leaving the shop.

The chicken itself is super crispy on the outside and cooked just right on the inside. You have the option of boneless or with bone.

The shop offers a range of flavors to choose from. We tried the honey butter and spicy versions and got 3 pieces of each. Both sauces were fantastic, although they were a bit messy to eat.

Trey mentioned that rice would pair nicely with the chicken, and we figured that’s probably what many people do when they eat it at home.

Sugar Cane Juice

Fresh sugar cane juice is a staple at any market in Vietnam. After trying various foods, we started to feel thirsty, so we stopped at a juice stall for fresh sugar cane juice.
